Pups4Patriots™ is a program committed to putting more leashes into the hands of more veterans in need. The program rescues qualified dogs in need of forever homes and trains them to act as service pets for veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Many brave members of the U.S. Armed Forces face another daunting battle when they return to civilian life. Psychological wounds, including PTS, can cause depression and social isolation—which leads to suicide far too often.
American Humane is dedicated to helping veterans heal through the power of the human-animal bond. Scientific research has increasingly revealed that with special training, dogs have the ability to lower stress, anxiety levels and feelings of depression, aid social reintegration, and give veterans much-needed comfort and confidence.
But there are still challenges that limit how many veterans get paired with service dogs. There are lengthy waiting lists, and the costs of intensive training can reach as high as $30,000.
