Coleman Natural's Antibiotic and Hormone Policy

The purpose of this outline is to assist the cattle feeder in producing wholesome beef free from antibiotics and without the assistace of supplemental hormones. If a product is not on a below list you MUST contact Coleman for approval before using that product.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics or ingredients containing possible antibiotic residues are not to be fed to cattle entering the Coleman Natural Program. See the below chart as to items NOT to be used.
Since antibiotics such as Rumensin cannot be fed, it is recommended that the roughage level of the ration be increased.  This will reduce digestive problems as well as decrease the incidence of liver abscesses.  The roughage level recommended is twelve to fourteen percent chopped alfalfa hay or its equivalent.  Cattle can be fed lower levels of roughage during summer feeding conditions.

Some of the antibiotics commonly fed to cattle include, but are not limited to*: The antibiotic ionophores are also included in this classification.  They include:
  • Chlortetracycline
  • Ocytetracycline
  • Tylan
  • Bacitracin
  • Neomycin
  • Bambermycin (Gaipro)
  • Virginiamycin (V Max)
  • Monensin (Rumensin)
  • Lasalocid (Bovatec)
  • Laidlomycin (Cattlyst)
  • *Other ionophores awaiting FDA approval will be included in the antibiotic classification.


    Hormones

    Growth promoting hormones cannot be used in the feed or via implant. The below chart shows examples of hormones that are NOT to be used.
